What does science tell us about why we are here?

A great deal about the how — and, honestly, very little about the why. That distinction is itself the interesting story.

Science tells us more than any generation before us has ever known — and stays quiet on the questions that matter most.

The origin of the universe

Cosmology now traces the observable universe back to a hot, dense state roughly 13.8 billion years ago. The equations describe expansion, structure, and the birth of stars in extraordinary detail. What they do not describe is why any of it exists in the first place.

Life and evolution

Biology tells the story of a four-billion-year unbroken thread from the first replicators to you. Every cell in your body is a distant cousin of every other living thing. That is a fact. What we make of it is not a fact — it is a decision.

Consciousness

Neuroscience can point to the correlates of experience in the brain but cannot yet say why there is experience at all. The philosopher David Chalmers calls this the "hard problem." Some traditions — Buddhism in particular — have been circling it for millennia.
