Pirkei Avot — “Chapters of the Fathers” — is a short collection of ethical sayings from the early rabbis, edited around the 3rd century CE.
It is not law and not theology. It is advice about character, delivered in single sentences you can carry for a lifetime.
The ancient teaching
“It is not your duty to finish the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.”
TranslationPirkei Avot 2:16, common English rendering (Rabbi Tarfon)
What does this mean today?
For anyone facing something too large — a climate, an illness, an institution — this line is unusually steadying. It removes the demand to complete and refuses the excuse to withdraw.
Avot also insists on humility about learning: acquire a friend, judge others generously, say “I do not know”.
