All Is Foreseen, Yet the Choice Is Yours
Short story about choice, foreknowledge, and the step only you can take.
A young man came to a wise teacher and asked: "If God already knows what will happen to me, what meaning do my choices have?"
The teacher took him to a crossroads.
One path climbed toward the mountains.
The other descended into the valley.
"I know both roads well," the teacher said. "I even know which one you will probably choose."
"Then have you already chosen for me?" the young man asked.
The teacher smiled. "No. My knowing does not move your feet."
The young man stood between the two roads for a long time. And then he understood.
Perhaps some things in life are already waiting for him — where he was born, the people he will meet, storms he never asked for, and goodbyes he never planned.
But here, at this crossroads, no one else can take the step for him.
He chose a path and began to walk.
The teacher watched him disappear into the distance and whispered: "All is foreseen, yet freedom of choice is given."

You are not free to choose everything that happens to you. But in every moment, you are free to choose who you become in response to it.

Pirkei Avot 3:15 is one of the most compressed teachings in Jewish wisdom: everything is seen, and yet the power to choose is given. The two clauses do not cancel each other out. They name different layers of reality.
There are parts of life we did not choose — our beginning, many of our losses, the people we will meet by accident. But within those givens, the step we take remains ours. Freedom is not the absence of fate; it is the dignity of response.
