סטואיציזם

חופש דרך מה שתלוי בנו.

במילים פשוטות

Stoicism is philosophy as training. Its claim is narrow and demanding: virtue is the only real good, and our judgements — not events — are what disturb us.

It survives mostly through three Romans: a slave (Epictetus), a statesman (Seneca) and an emperor (Marcus Aurelius) writing privately to himself at night.

ההקשר ההיסטורי

Founded by Zeno of Citium around 300 BCE, taught on the painted porch — the stoa — that gave it its name. The early logical and physical writings are almost entirely lost.

What we have is Roman and practical: Epictetus' Discourses (as recorded by Arrian), Seneca's letters, and Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, never intended for publication.

רעיונות מרכזיים

The dichotomy of control
Some things are up to us; most are not. Peace begins with knowing which is which.
Judgement, not event
The insult is not the harm; the opinion about the insult is.
Memento mori
Mortality as a lens that sharpens attention rather than a reason for despair.
Cosmopolitan duty
We are made for each other. Withdrawal is not the Stoic ideal; useful action is.

מה זה אומר היום?

Stoicism has been flattened lately into productivity advice. The original is more radical: it asks you to stop treating your reputation, comfort and outcomes as goods at all.

Its practical gift remains unmatched for anxiety — a repeated, unsentimental sorting of what is yours to do.

שאלות נפוצות

What is the main idea of Stoicism?
That virtue — wise, just, courageous, self-controlled action — is the only true good, and that suffering comes largely from our judgements about things outside our control.
Are Stoics emotionless?
No. Stoicism targets destructive passions built on false judgements, not feeling itself. Seneca writes constantly about grief, friendship and love.
Is Stoicism compatible with religion?
Ancient Stoicism had its own theology of a rational cosmos. Its practices have since been adopted by religious and secular readers alike.
