Sufism is the inner dimension of Islam: less concerned with argument than with longing. Its greatest teachers were poets, and their subject was a love that dismantles the person who feels it.
Rumi, Hafiz, Attar, Rabia — they write about wine and beloveds and lost caravans, and mean something about God.

Ascetic currents in early Islam grew into organised orders from the 9th century onward. Rabia of Basra (8th c.) insisted on love without hope of reward; al-Ghazali (11th c.) made the mystical path respectable to scholars.
Rumi (1207–1273) composed the Masnavi in Persian; the whirling of the Mevlevi order came from his circle. Most Rumi in English circulation is loose adaptation rather than translation — a distinction Ohananda always names.

Its counsel is not to numb that longing but to follow it — and to suspect the ego's endless commentary about how you are doing.
